All About Eve

Image
Watching the start of FX's television show  Feud , my love for Bette Davis has resurfaced. She has a special place in my heart as she reminds me so much of my Grandma, and as a child we would watch Bette Davis movies together. The show also reminded me of how I had never seen her well-known hit  All About Eve! I knew nothing of the plot going into the movie, and was I pleasantly surprised. The film is about how conniving and manipulative women are. It's about friendships amongst women and men in show business, and the illusion of friendship that is used to climb the ladder to become a famous entertainer. Essentially, what dark side of fame. Bette outshone everyone in this movie, and my favorite sequence is the day of her boyfriend's birthday party. Bette's character, Margo, knows that a certain female character is double crossing her, and when she confides in her boyfriend he thinks her to be a jealous and overreacting woman. Thus she does wh...

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

Image
An independent film shot in black and white, this classic and simple horror movie is definitely one of the most unique films I have seen on Netflix. The majority of the horror movies offered on Netflix stream are bloody with in-your-face-creatures, while A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is more about the cinematography, music, and thrill of not seeing the gore. This film is more than a horror movie- its a drama set in Iran's underbelly - a population that's poverty stricken, desperate, and exploitable. While it is slow at times, I really appreciated the beauty of the black and white cinematography, and I loved the soundtrack. My favorite scene is when the young man and woman are listening to a record in her room, and the intensity that is built as the two finally embrace, all the while wondering if one is going to murder the other. Another aspect I loved about this film was its pro-feminist ideology. Of the two main characters, one is a female vampire who kicks a...

Colonel Mustard

Image
For the longest time I refused to have any bright colors in my wardrobe, let alone yellow! As a plus size teenager and young adult I always gravitated towards black, oversized clothes because 1. it was part of my dark aesthetic, and 2. I also truly believed that black was going to make appear slimmer, and therefore more "presentable" and "likable" to others. It's taken me years to realize that's complete BS! I no longer to hide behind dark baggy clothes. I now have a lot of fun trying on all kinds of clothes of various colors that make me feel great. I enjoy trying on new things, and you should too. Don't be afraid to try something on- no matter the size or number! You never know what gems you may find. My latest favorite color has been mustard yellow. This is from the other day when I wore a pink and white flower dress alongside a yellow shrug. I purchased it from Ross a few years ago and wear it all the time! Dress: Torrid Shrug: Ross Leggi...

The Visit

Image
The Visit is a movie about two children, Becca and Tyler, who go to stay with their maternal grandparents that they have never met before. Before the children were born, their mother had a falling out with her parents because she ran away with a man whom they did not approve. The young girl hopes that meeting her grandparents will reunite their broken family. Once the children arrive, their grandparents start acting strangely. Is their grandparents odd behavior normal of old people? Or is there something really bad going on? This film is a horror comedy, which is definitely difficult to find the perfect balance. I think the movie was pretty successful at that, especially with the help of the goofy brother character. Initially, I didn't think I would like Tyler's character, but he totally grew on me. The last twenty minutes of the film is intense, and like most M. Night Shyamalan movies, had a good turn of events. It's like paranormal activity in that it's ...

Black and Pink Stripes

Image
I love this black and pink stripes ensemble I've put together! I don't remember the last time I've had a skirt in my wardrobe- I mainly wear dresses and leggings. When I tried this skirt on in the dressing room I fell in love! As an apple-shaped plus size woman, I have always had trouble finding skirts that are long enough, big-enough in the tummy area, and don't rise up my behind every time I walk! This skirt has a lot of volume, thick material, and great for twirling!  The cameo necklace was a gift from Christmas whose light pink hue goes perfect with the skirt.  Top: Forever 21 Velcro bow belt: Torrid Skirt: JC Penny (Ashley Nell Tipton) Booties: Avenue Cameo: Gift

The Babadook

Image
The Babadook , available on Netflix stream, was definitely not what I expected. From the trailer I imagined it would have a large storybook influence, like Mama or Don't Be Afraid of the Dark , but that's only part of it.  This film focuses on what's truly horrifying in life, like depression, grief, and the hardships of motherhood. The cinematography was excellent, and the actress who played the mother was  superb. This is the scariest horror movie I've seen since The Conjuring , and one I don't know if I could ever watch again because it is such a painfully dark film to watch. SPOILERS AHEAD:   The babadook is portrayed as a physical villain in this film, and it turns out that he is more than that. The babadook is a metaphor for what happens when you bottle up painful emotions. The mother had lost her husband the same day her son was born. The movie takes place seven years later where she still cannot talk about her late husband, or even celebrate her son...
