A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

An independent film shot in black and white, this classic and simple horror movie is definitely one of the most unique films I have seen on Netflix. The majority of the horror movies offered on Netflix stream are bloody with in-your-face-creatures, while A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is more about the cinematography, music, and thrill of not seeing the gore. This film is more than a horror movie- its a drama set in Iran's underbelly - a population that's poverty stricken, desperate, and exploitable.

While it is slow at times, I really appreciated the beauty of the black and white cinematography, and I loved the soundtrack. My favorite scene is when the young man and woman are listening to a record in her room, and the intensity that is built as the two finally embrace, all the while wondering if one is going to murder the other.
Another aspect I loved about this film was its pro-feminist ideology. Of the two main characters, one is a female vampire who kicks ass, and rides a skateboard for transportation. She does not kill at random- she chooses her victims based on those who have hurt and abused women. Though she is a vampire, a selfish creature that has to feed on humans in order to live, she is very tender and protective of those she cares about.

Summary: This arty, gritty noir vampire movie is worthy to watch for it’s beautiful cinematography and music.

Overall: 8/10
