The Witch (2015)

Image
The Witch is a period piece set during the time of the Puritans arriving in New England. It reflects how their patriarchal society undermined and outcasted what it did not understand. The movie is dreary and dark, and the forest seems to be character all on its own. While this is a great horror movie, it’s not for everyone in that its also a historical period piece. It can be a bit slow paced, dry, and their early American accents can sometimes be difficult to understand (I had the unfortunate experience of watching this movie in theaters with many teenagers who grew bored and started heckling the movie!). There was one scene that was particularly disturbing, which displayed a creepy witch in the shadows smearing herself with blood. It was what I had always imagined the Blair Witch to look like, if they had ever revealed her form. Lastly, I admire that this film has layered interpretations. *Spoilers ahead* Was the main character, Thomasin, a witch all along, and caused the death

Ginger Snaps (2000)

“I get this ache, and I thought it was for sex. But it’s to tear everything to fucking pieces” Made in 2000, Ginger Snaps is about two angsty teenage girls who deal with the horrible life transition of puberty, including menstruation, sexual interest, and turning into a werewolf. Puberty at its finest! A hybrid of The Craft and Goosebumps television series, this film has outcast teenagers in long plaid skirts, chunky shoes, and one-liner comebacks. It’s not only a werewolf movie, it’s a 90’s teen movie that is so over-dramatic you can’t help but keep watching. The special effects and creature makeup are not great, but they fit in with genre of its time. It’s especially fun to see how as one character transitions into a werewolf, she gradually gains white streaks and better makeup looks. The two main characters are enticing to watch as they have charisma and a strong sisterhood. The shy character Brigitte is played by actress Emily Perkins, also acted as Beverly Marsh in Step

Bee Dress

You can call me queen bee! I instantly fell for this embroidered a-line, Peter Pan collar dress from ModCloth. It’s a heavy and thick material, so it’s great for cold weather to wear with leggings. Not only does this dress have two small front pockets, it has  large side pockets! This may be my favorite dress I have ever purchased from ModCloth. Though a bit pricey whole sale, I was able to purchase this with a 25% off coupon.
