All About Eve

Watching the start of FX's television show Feud, my love for Bette Davis has resurfaced. She has a special place in my heart as she reminds me so much of my Grandma, and as a child we would watch Bette Davis movies together. The show also reminded me of how I had never seen her well-known hit All About Eve!

I knew nothing of the plot going into the movie, and was I pleasantly surprised. The film is about how conniving and manipulative women are. It's about friendships amongst women and men in show business, and the illusion of friendship that is used to climb the ladder to become a famous entertainer. Essentially, what dark side of fame.

Bette outshone everyone in this movie, and my favorite sequence is the day of her boyfriend's birthday party. Bette's character, Margo, knows that a certain female character is double crossing her, and when she confides in her boyfriend he thinks her to be a jealous and overreacting woman. Thus she does what she knows best, gets drunk and takes her rage out on everyone else. This is where the famous line "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night" comes from. Marilyn Monroe plays a small part in the movie, she's one of my favorite old Hollywood movie stars. This is one of Marilyn's first acting parts in a major motion picture, and she plays an actress trying to make it big in the theatre scene. She's funny and ditzy, and you can definitely see how it was a gateway to her bigger parts.

All About Eve is the original of movies like Single White Female and Showgirls, in which one woman becomes obsessed with the life of her girl friend, and literally tries to take over every aspect of her life. This includes her career, lover, wardrobe, and sometimes even a bowl haircut. Now that's truly horrifying.

Reason to watch: Bette Davis plays the meanest drunk ever, and this is her best acting performance ever.
Overall: 9/10
