10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Suspense. Mystery. Horror. Sci Fi?! This film has it all! It is connected to 2008 movie of the similar title “Cloverfield”. I have watched “Cloverfield”, and can honestly say that “10 Cloverfield Lane” can be enjoyed as a stand alone film.

This film is about a young woman Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up from a car crash chained to a bed in an underground bunker. The savior from her car crash, Howard (John Goodman) tells her that the world has come to an end. Is it really the apocalypse, or is Howard an insane conspiracy theorist? As the plot unfolds, secrets are revealed that change the course of the characters’ lives forever.

John Goodman, as usual, did a great acting performance. This movie really played with my emotions in that he usually plays a lovable character, I mean this guy played Dan Connor on Roseanne! But as the film plays out it is difficult for the viewer to realize if Howard is really trying to help Michelle, or if he has a dark hidden agenda.

One cinematic element that I really enjoyed is the brief close up shots of the characters hands. This displayed the passing of time, as well as clues of what the characters had been through. It was also a clever way to display the characters emotions, such as hands in a fist, hands trembling, etc.

Scoreboard:
Gore: 1/5
Suspense: 5/5
Writing: 4/5
Creature Design: 3/5
Overall: 7/10
