Comic Con Dress Up: Twin Peaks

Image
I have never dressed up for any convention before, and having obtained tickets this year to Comic Con, I figured I would dress up! The Twin Peaks aesthetic is filled with warm colors and plaid, as it takes place in the great northwest of the U.S. There’s also a pinch of vintage, with the major influence of the mysterious film noir, with the detective in a dapper suit and the women in vintage inspired clothing. I decided to go as Audrey Horne. Here’s what I wore: Top: Hanes (Amazon) Skirt: Hell Bunny (Unique Vintage) Flats: Crocs (most comfortable shoes for a Con!!) Dale Cooper Pin: TheSilverSpider (Etsy)

Suspiria (1977)

Image
Suspiria is a ethereal horror film from the 1970’s that is about a young American woman attending a ballet academy in Germany. Like many films from this time, the dialogue and sound can be quite clumsy and silly for today’s standards. But the plot and colorful sets make up for it. The set designs are exquisite, with intricate shapes and gothic detail in every room. I read on IMDB that the director specifically wanted the colors from Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to be imitated for the film! Like Snow White, the main character Suzy is a sweet soul who wants to learn the art of ballet, but is inconvenienced by her school mates and teachers. On top of the trials and tribulations of school, there’s a murderer on the school grounds! As Suzy begins to dig deeper into the school’s history, grim truths emerge. All in all, I can see how this film has been a pioneer for today’s film and television. For example, there’s a scene where someone is trying to escape the killer ...

Hereditary

Image
Hereditary is an independent horror movie released by the movie studio A24, which has produced other amazing indie horror films including The Witch .  This film is a thrill ride with twists and turns at every corner. It has a deep level of emotion in that it touches on the distressing impact of death of a family member, and how numbing life can be in the days that follow. I have not felt the same level of depression and apathy in a movie since The Babadook . The other portion of the movie is supernatural chaos. As I have mentioned in other posts, I am always a fan of films in which you are not sure if the characters are dreaming or awake. This movie made me feel uncomfortable and on the edge of my seat the entire time. The star that shines in the movie is Toni Collette, who plays the main character Annie.   Toni Collette is a fantastic actress in that she is able to display a full range of emotions within seconds. Her facial expressions, voice changes, and body movement i...

Pretty Girls Make Graves

After a morning of routine medical appointments, I decided to treat myself to retail therapy (plus I had a return purchase on the verge of expiration). I happened upon Lane Bryant, whom I usually solely purchase my bras from. But the DRESS SALE sign caught my attention, and I was in dire need of long maxi dresses for my summer wardrobe. I feel comfortable in my body to wear shorts/capris, it’s just so much more comfortable to wear dresses! The  dress I’m wearing is from Lane Bryant , which is going to be my go-to dress all summer long! The fabric is so soft- it feels like pajamas! My sparkly sandals are from the Avenue .

The Ritual (2017)

Image
The Ritual is a Netflix original film about five middle aged men who decide to reconnect their friendship a year after a tragedy effects them all by going hiking in the wilderness. If this storyline sounds familiar it’s because The Descent is the SAME principle, but with women, a cave, and some naked bat-man hybrids. The Ritual is haunting in that the woods feel like a character of its own- like something out of Wonderland. Sometimes reality doesn’t make sense, and for me that can be the most frightening thing of all. It’s psychological in that the woods/creature are able to tune in to each characters’ fears, and is able to control what they see when they’re dreaming and awake. The scenes where you’re not sure if the characters are alive or awake are very effective! Lastly, the creature design is one of the most unique, beautiful yet disgusting things I have ever seen in a film. The movie is worth watching just for the creature reveal! Scoreboard: Gore: 2/5 Suspens...

Grey Ruffles

I found this lovely blouse from Torrid. What caught my eye was the attention to detail on the sleeves. It gives me hints of Victorian and Spanish style! I love that this blouse is versatile with pants and skirts. Outfit Details: Blouse/Pants: Torrid Boots: The Avenue

Venus Blue

Springtime is already here; sweater weather I miss you already! Living in California, and as someone who tends to run warm, I always try to dress in layers for spring. Today was a particularly breezy day, so I decided to pair this short dress with long leggings. I found this adorable short dress in the CLEARANCE section at Target! I know that browsing the clearance at any  store can take a lot of time, but you never know what treasures you will find! I also always recommend looking at size numbers outside your comfort zone, and look for pieces based on what you know fits you. For example, last year I snagged a size 14 dress at Torrid that was stretchy enough to fit me perfectly! Outfit Details: Dress: Target Leggings: Torrid Shoes/Bag: Ross
